Matthew Gilsenan

A Celtic Tenor that can sing Dylan, Cohen, Sacred music, art songs, folk and even country

 Matthew Gilsenan

From farming beginnings in north Meath, Matthew Gilsenan has journeyed from being a UCD Engineering graduate to choral singer to prize winning soloist to internationally acclaimed platinum recording artist as a Celtic Tenor. Now he has launched himself as a solo artist, singing the great songs that mean most to him, spanning many genres from Opera to Rock, in his uniquely engaging way.

In 1998, Matthew took a 6-month break from a promising engineering career to get the singing bug out of his system, within a year he, with his two colleagues, had been signed to EMI Classics internationally, and created The Celtic Tenors. Since 2000, he has been performing all over the globe to packed houses, developing into a seasoned and accomplished artist. Celtic Tenor downtime is the perfect opportunity for Matthew to sing some of the songs that mean most to him, and showcase his artistry for all to see and hear.

A part of what drives Matthew is breaking down the borders between certain different styles of music. He has a true lyric tenor voice, at home with Puccini or Verdi but he only uses the bel canto style for opera, he believes that there can be many style tools at the singer’s disposal and works just as hard on his natural untrained sound. So, expect grand opera, Dylan, Cohen, Sacred music, art songs, folk and even country. Matthew’s core belief is that a good song is a good song, no matter what its origin. So Matt’s 6 month break from engineering became a lifelong devotion to making music and no regrets in sight.
