Folklore & Women: The power of folklore in reclaiming female stories (19:30)
How have myths and fairytales shaped feminist thought? Explore the power of folklore, its symbols and role in today’s society. With Q&A.
We often say history is written by the victors, and more often than not, those victors were men. For centuries, men’s lives were more visible, more documented, and more likely to be recorded in public and written spaces. As a result, history tends to reflect their experiences far more than those of women.
This talk isn’t about blame; it’s about alternatives. Folklore, oral narratives, and myth offer powerful ways to explore the lives, beliefs and aspirations of women across time. From stories of the otherworld to rituals, customs, and tales passed down through generations, these narratives open up new ways of understanding voices that history often overlooks. In re-examining these stories, we not only reclaims hidden aspects of the past – we gain a richer, more layered view of the present, and the possibilities of the future.

Constellations - Tuesday, 21st October (20:00)
Marianne, a physicist, and Roland, a beekeeper, meet at a party. They hit it off, and go for a drink. Or perhaps they don’t. They go home together, or maybe they go their separate ways. Perhaps Marianne is engaged to someone else, perhaps Roland is. Maybe she breaks his heart, maybe he breaks hers. Perhaps they come together and their love story can finally take root and grow, or perhaps it will be tragically cut short.
Nick Payne’s beautiful play, Constellations, explores how even the smallest change in our lives can dramatically alter the course we take. It is a spellbinding exploration of love, science, quantum theory, and infinite possibility for heartbreak or for hope.

Leaving Dublin, Ireland where he was born and raised until the age of 22, David got drunk on travel and never quite hit sobriety of it. Also a bestselling writer, David recorded his debut special Documented for Dry Bar Comedy in 2019, and his follow up Cultural Appreciation in 2023. Ardal O'Hanlon - Not Himself - 11th September 2025
Oh, it’s all there! All the trademarks are in evidence in Ardal’s latest show. Beautifully crafted stand-up comedy? Yes.Celebrated use of language? Tick. Lateral thinking, surreal flourishes, sharp observations? Of course. As for the occasional profundity? Maybe.
Despite his best attempts over many decades to put the world to rights, it is still a colossal mess. And so, Ardal has no choice but to go out on the road again. Like the good comedy doctor he is, he fearlessly diagnoses the various pathologies and neuroses that are currently ravaging humanity. Disclaimer: No solutions provided.
After an alarming experience at the supermarket, Ardal reflects on who he is as a man and a comedian. He examines his own ethnic and religious background. And thinks twice about the very core of his identity as a voice of reason. Is everything a big lie? With no major trauma of his own to draw on for material, apart from the drag of getting older, he also turns his gaze outwards at the joys and follies of contemporary life. Towel Animals? A.I.? Chair Yoga? Cauliflower as a main course? Yes. Yes. Yes. And Yes. No current idiocy is left unexamined.
With a highly developed sense of the ridiculous, and proper comedy bones, NOT HIMSELF, is a testament to the healing power of humour. And the joy of jokes.

The Psychology of Cults: Manipulation, coercion & control in the digital age
When we hear the word ‘cult’, we might think about notorious religious groups such as Heaven’s Gate, Children of God, and Scientologists. But cults and other high control groups are everywhere, and they definitely are not always religious in character, with some luring people in under the false pretence of wellness and personal growth.
It’s estimated there are around 2,000 cults in operation in the UK today, and 10,000 in the United States. Research from The Family Survival Trust in 2022 called this phenomenon a “hidden epidemic" in the UK, estimating thousands of adults and children are being deceived into joining cult groups. This talk examines the psychology of cults: what draws people to join cults, why they might stay, and what cult leaders and leadership members get out of controlling people.
Doors open at 7pm, talk starts at 7:30pm - come down early to grab a good seat!

Songwriters in the Round
Singer-Songwriters Patrick Silke, Willie Headon and Pete Kavanagh gather for a ‘Songwriters In The Round’ gig, at The Moat Theatre on Saturday August 2nd 2025 at 8pm. There may also be a guest or two joining us on the night.
Known as "In the Round," these gigs bring together 3 Songwriters, who take turns performing their own songs (maybe a cover or 2) while sharing the personal stories and inspiration behind them. It’s all about creating a relaxed, cosy atmosphere where the artists connect with the audience on a deeper level.
You’ll hear the funny, heartfelt and sometimes unexpected tales that shaped their music, which is a unique and insightful experience. It's a show that's full of great tunes, good vibes and stories that stay with you long after the night is over.
These 3 singer-songwriters are all founding members of The Muddy River Band, who are currently touring nationwide, performing the songs of Van Morrison, Neil Young and Bob Dylan.
This is a rare and unique opportunity to catch them together performing a set of their own compositions.
